Some initial thoughts on job hunting:
On job seeking in general:
Most candidates overestimate their knowledge of the market, their own skills and abilities. Ensure that you are prepared learn what you need to know and should do before interview, so that you look professional, knowledgeable and in control.
Timing, personality, appearance, relevance and qualifications provide the right mix for job success.
On getting interviews:
A difficult art; Very much a numbers game. Identifying the target area, persistence, mailings, constant review and revision in addition to seizing the moment, provides most opportunities.
On job security:
Real job security does not exist.
Accepting lesser positions than your qualifications deserve may result in your dismissal or premature resignation as a result of little or no satisfaction. Personality conflicts/frustration the major causes.
On resume content:
Your background should be presented as a series of accomplishments. A visible summary which is easily followed and interesting (descriptive) will receive more attention. Never underestimate your achievements.
Be aware your resume will get you the interview the interview will get you the job.
On being interviewed:
Not the time to be meek. Do not beg for the job you wont get it!
Do create favorable first impressions; Ensure that you are thoroughly prepared, these elements, plus personality are more important than credentials at this time. Articulate answers and confidence in your ability are inspirational influences upon your interviewer and will start you out on the right track.
On follow ups:
Never leave a job application open-ended. You have a right to a decision, if not immediately, within a short time. Should this not occur, telephoning your interviewer restating interest and requesting information on progress is advisable.
On the overall skills of the job hunter:
If the skills of job-hunting were included as a compulsory study program within colleges, high schools and tertiary educational institutions, most participants would not graduate too little attention is given to the importance of an all encompassing structured presentation, which depicts the candidate in the best light.
